Taken from “Soften Forever” E.P., released June 14, 2019.
The Cincinnati Shoegaze band returns with a collection of songs that roil and break like the sun through dense clouds. This sense of newfound purpose is encapsulated in the album title Soften Forever – which reads as a statement of commitment to one another after seeing themselves through a year of bad breaks, break ups and turmoil writ large. This is most keenly felt on the album opener “Undo”. Soften Forever roars out of the gate with walls of feedback and crashing guitar tones before ebbing into lushly orchestrated and deeply felt compositions that stare down depression and dissolving relationships with as much unflinching honesty as they do moments of immersive wonder and joy – often within the same track.
Recorded in a Westside chapel with the assistance of Justin Golden (Over The Rhine, Kim Taylor), Soften Forever is a follow up to their acclaimed 2017 release Seen + Unseen which garnered Soften a Best New Artist nomination at the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards. Comprised of vocalist/guitarist Brianna Kelly, of whom Pitchfork/Bandcamp Daily writer Marc Masters described her 2018 Whited Sepulchre Records tape as, “four gorgeous new tracks, which are gradual and patient but also constantly in motion. Her thick, echoing guitar wraps around her meditative voice like grass spreading across the roots of trees.”, Jon Delvaux (bass), Corey Waddell (guitar) and Andrew Aragon (drums).
