Swedish musician Tobias Arbo has released his debut single “Saudade” via CRC Records, and announced his first live performance on 1st December in his hometown of Stockholm.
Accompanied by a wistful and nostalgic home-video style visual, “Saudade” introduces Tobias Arbo as a compelling new singer and songwriter capable of tying hearts in knots.
Noting Bon Iver’s ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’, Phoebe Bridgers’ ‘Stranger In The Alps’ and Sufjan Stevens’ ‘Carrie & Lowell’ as points of inspiration for his creations, Tobias recruited Zach Hanson to mix the project – who is already well-known for his work with Bon Iver and other acts including Waxahatchee, Owen and Sylvan Esso.
Over delicate finger-picked guitars and engrossing atmospheric production flourishes, Tobias’ welcoming vocal brushes the instrumental with melancholic lyrical imagery [“The leaves they look so desperate when they’re falling / Searching for their loved ones in the piles”] as the track builds with the addition of piano, subtle strings and graceful horns.
Speaking on the lyrical inspiration behind his debut single, Tobias said: “Saudade is a Portuguese word that can be translated into ‘the melancholy of missing something you never had’, which in itself is a paradox. To me, this song is about that feeling. When the possibility of something coming true that you long for is slipping away. And before you even had it, you start to feel like you’ve lost that something irrevocably“.
Tobias Arbo will continue to share new music over the coming months with his first project due for release in spring 2023. On the project’s visuals, Tobias has collaborated with Swedish artist Olof Grind – known for their work on Phoebe Bridgers’ ‘Punisher’ and First Aid Kit’s ‘Palomino’ album art and photography.
