Curlicues is the musical project of Bristol-based artist L.A. Foster. Long in gestation, his first EP, “Orchids”, sprang forth in 2013, its songs the sole remnants of a catalogue of private home recordings, made as The Plums in rural Warwickshire, yet returned to and heavily edited some time later whilst living in Saigon, Vietnam.
“The Long Transition“, the debut full-length, followed in 2015. Recorded in a number of bedrooms and living rooms across the UK over a twelve-month period, these songs transcend their homespun origins, creating a magical sound-world from rich and intricate arrangements for guitar, piano, cello and violin. The album’s release was accompanied by “A Killing Jar”, a short film that acts as a thematic lynchpin for this vital phase of the project.
Following intermittent live performances over the last twelve months, attention now shifts from guitar to piano for a haunting EP, “In Photographs” (“Anxiety is Love’s Greatest Killer”). Focussed around a series of lyrical vignettes, the EP ushers in a fascinating new chapter, with opener “Pink Blossom” introducing the collection by patiently building to a majestic climax over its eight minute runtime. Drifting horns cushion the spare arrangements throughout, establishing an atmosphere of quiet sophistication when married to Foster’s evocative vocals.
“Pink Blossom” is featured as the current “single of the week” of the radio show L’Attimo Fuggente.
