November 13th will see the international release of The Ocean Party’s fifth album in three years. As their first album recorded in a studio, “Light Weight” has a refined pop sound coloured with touches of horns and pedal steel. Recorded in their adopted home of Melbourne with John Lee (Lost Animal, Love of Diagrams) at the helm, the prolific young band explore their sound along avenues they had only touched on with earlier releases.
Inspired by 80s pop and post-punk, but firmly grounded in the current day, the six songwriters amalgamate their inspirations into a unique collage. From intimate and brooding to upbeat and quasi-psychedelic, “Light Weight” is a dynamic collection of songs crafted by the band over the last eight months.
As the inaugurating album for new bass player/song-writer Mark Rogers, Light Weight is another step in the bands shared writing process with all six members singing and writing lyrics. Furthermore, “Light Weight” features a number of cameos from familiar Melbourne musicians – Ashley Bundang (Totally Mild, Zone Out) singing backing vocals and Aaron Silver (Francolin) contributing trumpet.
Last year’s Soft Focus was AMP long listed, and featured in many end of year lists, including #3 on the Mess+Noise Readers Poll and #5 on the Critics Poll. After growing support from Australian radio, Soft Focus was Packet Album at triple j and received heavy rotation at community radio nationally.
During their short history, The Ocean Party has supported the likes of Real Estate, Stephen Malkmus and Cass McCombs. Last year they made their US debut at CMJ, and played a bunch of shows along the East and West Coasts.
