“Singing Together Apart” is the final track of “Music Over Distance”, a compilation featuring 22 collaborative tracks recorded between two or more artists occupying different households during the COVID-19 lockdown period, to raise money for personal protective equipment for NHS workers: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/masks4nhsheroes.
The results are fascinating and eclectic featuring unique collaborations across the miles. Great Panoptique Winter and Katie English and Peter Hollo are artists swapping files between Australia and the UK, CHONK is a collaboration between Philadelphia hip-hop wonderkid MALK and two NHS nurses based in Leeds, whilst Commoners Choir led by Boff Whalley (Chumbawamba) went virtual and recorded the voices of almost 50 participants. Leeds Gareth Brown’s produced a generation spanning collaboration with London-based four year old percussionist Rory Cousens and there are several examples of artists working together for the first time – psych synthesist Alice Hubble produces longform kosmische with guitarist Andy Abbott while ambient mainstay Benoît Pioulard collaborates with Gardener.
Commoners Choir is a choir dedicated to singing about the world around us, its inequalities and injustices, and to having fun while doing so.
