“Another Year” is the third single from “You Are Ours”, the forthcoming new album from David John Fitzpatrick, who formerly recorded and performed under the name Les Étoiles.
“Another Year” is in fact a reworking of an old Les Étoiles song, although it retains the original’s soaring countermelodies, performed by former label mate EL Heath on the Ondes Martenot (an early twentieth century electronic instrument used to great effect by French composer Olivier Messiaen, and more recently by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead).
David says: “This is one of my favourite songs that I have written, which was partly why I wanted to revisit it. I wrote it over ten years ago, and have performed it at every gig I have played since then. The lyrics address my home town of Bridgnorth in Shropshire, a place I have always loved, and where I have recently returned to live with my wife and son. The video is itself a kind of homage to Bridgnorth, and I have tried to capture the spectacular sight of the town’s distinctive red sandstone bathed in sunlight.”
“You Are Ours” is a debut of sorts, being David’s first new album to bear his own name, following nearly a decade of releases under the moniker Les Étoiles. “Alight, Alight”, David’s fourth and final album as Les Étoiles, was recently reissued by Pegdoll records, this time under his own name.
